Why Mediterranean, why now

Italian summer is suddenly everywhere. Pinterest's "Italian summer" board has over 50 million pins. White Lotus Sicily, Call Me By Your Name, Conversations with Friends, the entire #italianhotgirlsummer corner of TikTok. We don't think this is a trend that's about to end. We think it's a real cultural shift.

For about a decade, the dominant aesthetic in home and lifestyle was Nordic — bone-white, oat-colored, sheer-linen, slow-living-Sunday-in-Stockholm. That aesthetic was a response to a particular moment: post-2008 anxiety, "hygge," everyone trying to make their apartment look like a Kinfolk magazine spread. It was about the absence of stimulus.

The Mediterranean shift is the opposite. It's about presence — warm light, ripe fruit, espresso ring on marble, butter on a croissant, herbs growing wild. After three pandemic years of negative-space-as-virtue, people want texture, color, smell, social warmth. They want a kitchen that looks lived-in. They want a dinner that goes long. They want a candle that smells like somewhere worth being, not somewhere safe to be alone.

Why this is also the right candle market

Candles map closely to home aesthetic. When the dominant home aesthetic was Nordic, the dominant candles were Diptyque Baies, Boy Smells Cameo, Le Labo Santal 33 — quiet, woody, "sophisticated" by way of restraint. Those candles still sell, but the cultural air is moving.

The next decade of luxury candles will lean warmer, more social, more food-and-place-coded. Otherland's Latte collection is an early signal. Maison Margiela's Coffee Break is another. Voluspa's coconut-mango. The market is rotating toward warmth.

What we're betting on

Eclait's four candles are a bet on this exact shift. We aren't trying to be Diptyque-quiet. We're trying to be the candle equivalent of a slow lunch in Italy — warm, present, ripe, social. Saint-Tropez, Verona, Provence, Toscana: four mornings, four kinds of warmth, four reasons to light a candle that aren't "I need to relax."

If we're wrong about the cultural shift, we'll smell good in the dark. If we're right, we'll be in the right place when most candle brands are still selling oat-colored quiet.
